Motor Testing

Checking motor supply, running current, rotation and winding insulation.

The problem

Motors fail from insulation breakdown, single-phasing, overload and wrong rotation. Many failures can be predicted from simple measurements.

Measurement required

Phase sequence before first start, running current per phase, supply voltage balance, and insulation resistance of windings (including PI/DAR trends for larger machines).

Instrument type

A phase indicator, a clamp meter for running current, a multimeter with a low-pass filter for drive-fed motors, and an insulation tester suited to the motor voltage.

Relevant Kyoritsu instruments

Listed because their documented specifications cover this measurement. Check the full specifications for your exact requirement.

Low-pass filter for measurements on motor-drive (inverter) outputs.

PI and DAR insulation diagnosis at up to 5 kV.

Phase sequence check before connecting three-phase motors.

Measures AC running current up to 1000 A True RMS.

PI and DAR diagnostic tests on insulation.

How to choose

For low-voltage motors a 500 V or 1000 V insulation tester is common; larger or medium-voltage machines need higher test voltages and PI/DAR functions. Follow the motor manufacturer's test recommendations.

Safety considerations

Isolate and lock off the motor before insulation testing, discharge windings after the test, and never insulation-test through a drive without disconnecting it.
