Earth Resistance Testing

Verifying earth electrodes so that fault current flows safely to ground.

The problem

Earth electrodes corrode and soil dries out. A high earth resistance can stop protective devices operating and leave metalwork at dangerous voltages during a fault.

Measurement required

Earth electrode resistance by the 3-pole fall-of-potential method or a simplified 2-pole method, plus earth voltage before testing.

Instrument type

A digital earth tester with test leads and auxiliary spikes, conforming to IEC 61557-5.

Relevant Kyoritsu instruments

Listed because their documented specifications cover this measurement. Check the full specifications for your exact requirement.

3-pole and 2-pole earth resistance to 1999 Ω, earth voltage to 200 V.

How to choose

Check lead lengths, ranges, IP rating for outdoor use and whether you also need soil resistivity (4-pole) measurement.

Safety considerations

Beware of earth potential rise near faulted systems; check earth voltage before connecting, and follow site rules at substations.
