Kyoritsu Power Clamp Meters

A clamp power meter combines a clamp meter with voltage leads, so it can calculate active, reactive and apparent power, power factor and harmonics as well as current and voltage.

It is a practical way to check a load, verify power-factor correction or look for harmonic distortion at a panel without installing a fixed power analyser.

What a clamp power meter measures

Power and power factor. Active power (kW) is the useful power a load consumes; apparent power (kVA) is voltage × current; reactive power (kvar) is the difference caused by inductive or capacitive loads. Power factor is the ratio of kW to kVA. A low power factor increases current for the same useful power.

Wiring configurations. Check that the meter supports the systems you work on. The KEW 2062 covers single-phase two-wire (1P2W), single-phase three-wire (1P3W), three-phase three-wire (3P3W) and three-phase four-wire (3P4W).

Harmonics. Electronic loads draw non-sinusoidal current. Harmonic readings (THD and individual orders) help explain overheating of neutrals and transformers or nuisance tripping.

When to use a power quality analyser instead. A clamp power meter shows spot readings and simple min/max recording. For long-term logging of multiple channels, events and flicker, a dedicated power quality analyser is the better tool.

Questions about power clamp meters

Can a clamp power meter measure three-phase power?

Yes. The KEW 2062 supports 3P3W and 3P4W systems as well as single-phase configurations.

What is THD?

Total harmonic distortion expresses how much of a waveform consists of harmonics. THD-F is referred to the fundamental and THD-R to the total RMS value.
