Using a voltage detector safely

Indication, not proof. A non-contact detector indicates the presence of AC voltage. Shielded cables, DC circuits, low batteries or poor coupling can give no indication even when a conductor is live. Before working on a circuit, prove it dead with a contact voltage tester or multimeter that you have checked on a known live source.

Sensitivity settings. A high-sensitivity setting detects lower voltages or conductors further away; a low setting helps pinpoint the live conductor among several. The KEW 5711 offers both.

Safety rating. Choose a detector rated for the category and voltage where you use it; the KEW 5711 is rated CAT IV 600 V / CAT III 1000 V.

Questions about voltage testers & detectors

Can a non-contact detector detect DC?

No. Non-contact detectors respond to alternating electric fields and do not detect DC voltage.

Is a voltage detector enough to prove a circuit dead?

No. Use it as a quick check, then prove dead with a contact voltage tester or multimeter, checked before and after on a known live source.
