Insulation Testing

Measuring insulation resistance of cables, installations and equipment.

The problem

Insulation deteriorates with heat, moisture, contamination and age. Poor insulation leads to leakage current, RCD trips, shocks and short circuits.

Measurement required

A DC test voltage is applied between conductors or between conductors and earth, and the resulting resistance is read in MΩ or GΩ. Timed tests (PI and DAR) show insulation condition.

Instrument type

A digital insulation tester with test voltages suited to the equipment: 250–1000 V for low-voltage installations, 2.5–5 kV for medium-voltage cables and machines.

Relevant Kyoritsu instruments

Listed because their documented specifications cover this measurement. Check the full specifications for your exact requirement.

Insulation resistance at 250 / 500 / 1000 V to 2000 MΩ (IEC 61557-2).

Six test voltages from 50 to 1000 V with readings to 40 GΩ, plus PI/DAR.

Insulation tests from 250 V to 5000 V with readings to 1 TΩ.

How to choose

Check the available test voltages, the maximum reading, whether PI/DAR and memory are needed, and whether you also need 200 mA continuity for installation testing.

Safety considerations

Test only isolated circuits, disconnect sensitive electronics, and allow the tester to discharge the circuit before removing leads.
