Kyoritsu Clamp Meters

A clamp meter measures current by closing its jaws around a conductor, so you can read load current without breaking the circuit. Most models also measure voltage, resistance and continuity through test leads.

This range covers AC clamp meters, AC/DC models for DC circuits such as batteries and solar, a leakage clamp meter that resolves 0.1 mA, a fork-type tester for small conductors, and a clamp power meter.

How to choose a Kyoritsu clamp meter

AC only or AC/DC. AC clamp meters use a current transformer and read only alternating current. AC/DC models use a Hall-effect sensor and also read direct current, which you need for batteries, UPS systems, solar PV strings, DC drives and electroplating.

Current range and jaw size. Check the highest current you expect and the diameter of the largest conductor or bundle. Kyoritsu jaws in this range run from 10 mm (fork type) to 55 mm.

Leakage measurement. Standard clamp meters cannot resolve milliamps. To trace earth leakage, for example behind nuisance RCD trips, use a leakage clamp meter such as the MODEL 2434 and clamp around both line and neutral together.

Safety rating. For work at distribution boards choose at least CAT III; for the supply side of main breakers and service cables choose CAT IV.

Power measurement. If you need kW, power factor or harmonics rather than current alone, see the power clamp meters.

Questions about clamp meters

Can an AC clamp meter measure DC current?

No. AC-only clamp meters rely on a current transformer that responds only to alternating current. Choose an AC/DC model such as the KEW 2055, KEW 2003A or KT 203 for DC current.

Why does my clamp meter read zero on a cable?

If you clamp around a whole cable, the currents in the line and neutral cancel out. Clamp around one conductor at a time for load current. Clamping around both is how leakage clamp meters detect leakage current.

What is a leakage clamp meter used for?

It measures very small currents, down to 0.1 mA on the MODEL 2434, so you can find insulation leakage and the cause of RCD trips without switching off the circuit.
