Kyoritsu Insulation Testers

An insulation tester (often called a megger) applies a DC test voltage between conductors, or between a conductor and earth, and measures the insulation resistance in megohms or gigohms.

This range covers digital insulation and continuity testers for installation work up to 1000 V, and a 5 kV high-voltage tester for cables, transformers and machines.

How to choose an insulation tester

Test voltage. Pick test voltages that suit the rated voltage of the equipment. Low-voltage installation testing normally uses 250 V, 500 V or 1000 V. Equipment with electronics may need 50–125 V. Medium-voltage cables, transformers and large motors usually call for 2.5 kV or 5 kV.

Measuring range. Higher test voltages and good insulation give high readings. A tester that reads to 40 GΩ or 1 TΩ lets you see trends in insulation condition rather than just an over-range symbol.

Diagnostic tests. Polarisation Index (PI) and Dielectric Absorption Ratio (DAR) compare readings over time to show moisture or contamination in insulation. They are standard for machine and cable maintenance.

Continuity. For installation testing you also need low-resistance continuity at 200 mA, as required by IEC 61557-4. The MODEL 3005A and KEW 3552 include it.

Safety. Insulation testers generate high voltage. Always isolate and prove the circuit dead first, and let the tester discharge the circuit after each test.

Questions about insulation testers

What test voltage should I use?

Match the test voltage to the equipment rating and your testing standard. Typical choices are 500 V for 230/415 V installations and 1000 V for some motors and cables; medium-voltage equipment often needs 2.5 kV or 5 kV. Check the equipment manufacturer's recommendations.

What are PI and DAR?

PI is the ratio of the 10-minute to the 1-minute insulation reading; DAR is typically the ratio of the 60-second to the 30-second reading. Rising values indicate healthy insulation; low ratios suggest moisture or contamination.

Can I test live circuits?

No. Insulation tests must be done on isolated, de-energised circuits. Kyoritsu testers warn if voltage is present, but that does not replace safe isolation.
